In the creation of my pieces, I participate in my own ritual. Throwing the forms, altering, and finally the decorative line work, are all highly ceremonial to me.
I take inspiration from the incised ivory work from the cultures of the North. The fine lines on my pottery reference this and accentuate the forms, adding another element of celebration of form and nature to the process.
I choose to fire my work in the soda kiln. This type of firing requires my direct involvement throughout the firing, a continuation of my ritual in creation. The intense process of firing my work, beginning with wood and converting fuel source to waste oil, adds to the excitement and mystery of the atmospheric magic of the soda kiln.
